MCA #10 - Saturday morning

The bed Roy woke up in was rather big, but big beds were fun and he wriggled away from the girl sleeping beside him to inspect the heap of kittens lying at the foot of the bed. Dee got up to inspect him back and her whiskers tickles his cheek and nose, making Roy giggle.

"Stop that! It tickles."

"Alan! Shhh! Be quiet!" Aly exclaimed, rolling over in bed. "It's sleeping time!"

"S'not. It's light out," Roy argued, closing his eyes as Dee sniffed his face. "And I'm not Alan."

She sat up, rubbing her eyes. "Why're you in my bed then?" she demanded, scowling at the boy and the kitten who was obviously betraying her.

Roy shrugged and rolled to his side, petting the kitten. "Because I am."

Aly scowled more. "You better not have cooties."

Roy scowled right back. "Cooties aren't real. You're silly if you believe in them."

"'M not silly!" Aly snapped. "They are real!"

He rolled his eyes. "Not like that."

"Like what then?" she asked, flopping down onto her tummy.

"There aren't any illnesses that only just boys or girls have," he told her wisely. "I read it in a book."

"You're wrong," Aly told him flatly. "An' I want breffast."

"Am not!" he argued instantly.

"You're a BOY," Aly argued. "Girls are way smarter."

"Yeah? So what books have you read?" Roy asked stubbornly.

Aly glared. "Books don' make you smart."

"Yes, they do!" Roy said, looking almost shocked that Aly would imply anything else. "You can learn a bunch of things from them!"

"Nuh uh," she argued. "You gotta be smart first! Books jus' got facts."

"You can be smart as much as you want," he told her, "but if you don't read, then you don't know anything!"

"I DO SO!" Aly yelled, scaring Ow off the bed.

"Like?" Roy demanded proof and he wrapped his arms around Dee to keep her from running off too.

Aly tossed her hair. "I know how to get cake whenever I want."

"That's not smart," he rolled his eyes and let go of the kitten as he pushed to stand up on the bed.

She stood up too, her hands on his hips. "Smarter than you!"

"Are not," he argued, crossing his arms.

"Uh huh," Aly told him. "An' you got cooties."
