MCA #10 - Saturday morning

The bed Roy woke up in was rather big, but big beds were fun and he wriggled away from the girl sleeping beside him to inspect the heap of kittens lying at the foot of the bed. Dee got up to inspect him back and her whiskers tickles his cheek and nose, making Roy giggle.

"Stop that! It tickles."

"I'm not allowed a real sword until I'm 10," Aly said poutily. "You don't have one either!"

"No! But I thought you meant a real sword!" Roy pouted back.

She was too respectful of the sword to throw it down, but she set it on the bed, obviously upset. "I wouldn't let you play with a real sword! They're weapons. You don't play with weapons."

"I just wanted to see," he whined, not yet noticing the upset part.

Aly handed him the horse back. "Fine. Here."

Roy frowned, refusing to take it. "I gave you that."

"Cause you wantd to see my sword," Aly said, frowning. "An' you don' like my sword so fine. Have it back."

Oh. "I just gave you that," he replied, glancing back at the sword. "It's not bad."

"My daddy gave it to me," she said staunchly. "It's perfect."

"Okay," Roy said more quietly now. "Show me again?" he asked softly.

She eyed him for a moment then set the horse carefully on the dresser. "Here," she said, picking the sword up and taking the sheath off this time, very carefully not pointing it at him.

He still didn't think it was a real sword, but he gave it the proper inspection. "It's pretty."

"Swords aren't pretty," she giggled. "It's dangerous. Wanna hold it?"

"It's not ugly," he defended and he nodded. "Yes, please."

"It's beautiful," Aly said worshipfully as she handed it to him.

"Okay," he agreed, carefully taking the... toy sword from Aly. "And how do you call this?" he asked, weighing it in his hand.

"Call what?" she asked, watching carefully.

"I don't know!" he said sheepishly.

Aly grinned. "You gotta put your feet farther apart. And hold the sword up to block things. That's called ready."

Roy eyed her, then shuffled his feet apart, but it didn't exactly feel like he was ready like this. "So?"

She kicked his right foot a little bit farther out. "Almost. Gotta hold your sword more steady."

"Hey! I can't hold it steady if you do that!" he protested.

"You gotta hold it steady when someone else hits it with a sword," Aly said, rolling her eyes. "My foot shouldn't matter."

"I've never done this! It matters now!"

"You're doin' okay for a beginner," she acknowledged graciously.
