MCA #7 - After noon

Having the day off, Roy was reading through a book on Earth weapons. His chess board was on the dining room table, set up already for a game that he intended to win. He would need his uniform to get cleaned after it got cake on it after all. For now, he was actually wearing slacks and a white shirt. He could do casual.

"Oh, I know I can," he told her smugly.

Aly studied him for a long moment. "Perhaps you can."

Looking back at the chessboard, she finally moved her queen into play.

The smug look stayed in place a moment longer, until he realised just how much trouble that last move brought him in. The smile faded a little, his eyes moving over the board as he calculated the best move. Finally he moved his other knight forward.

She smirked at the length of time it took for him to decide on a move and quickly slid her bishop across.

Still not good. He moved his castle to block the bishop.

The castle moving out of the way was apparently what Aly was hoping for as she jumped her knight into a spot that used to be threatened by the rook.

Roy glanced up at her, not completely oblivious to what she was doing. "You really don't want to clean my uniform, do you?"

"I'm not a laundry maid," she pointed out with a smirk.

"Nor are you a bath servant," Roy shot back and moved his second bishop to try to do some damage control to his right flank.

"At least I have the outfit for that," Aly replied, moving a pawn into a false attack at the bishop.

That remark definitely made his mind wander down a direction it shouldn't and instead of looking further into the move, he captured the pawn with his knight.

And she slid the bishop into the opening left by his knight.

"Or perhaps I left it at home," she said thoughtfully. "Either way."

He couldn't quite believe he hadn't seen that one coming. Forgetting about outfits for a moment - and quite definitely annoyed that she'd managed to distract him with that - he studied the board again, noticing the inevitable.

With a sigh, he lay down his king in surrender. "You win."

"Good game," she said with a pleased grin.

"Because you won," he laughed and held out his hand.

"That's part of it, of course," she laughed, taking his hand in hers. "But it was still well-played and lots of fun."

Roy grinned at her. "That it was," he agreed, brushing his thumb over her knuckles before slowly pulling his hand back.

"And you owe me a favour," she replied mischievously. "To be determined in the future, I believe?"

"Something you'll undoubtedly make me regret," he agreed with a nod.

"Think me that cruel?" she asked.

He raised an eyebrow. "You'll ask me a favour that I'd enjoy doing?"

"Probably not," she agreed, chuckling. "But perhaps you'll not regret it."

"Now I'm curious," he told her, not quite sure what she was thinking of.

"Hmm," she smirked at him. "Good."

Roy laughed and absently picking up his king. "Then I might be looking forward to seeing what you come up with."
