MCA #7 - After noon

Having the day off, Roy was reading through a book on Earth weapons. His chess board was on the dining room table, set up already for a game that he intended to win. He would need his uniform to get cleaned after it got cake on it after all. For now, he was actually wearing slacks and a white shirt. He could do casual.

Roy grinned. "Or I'm just making sure you want to try coming over again," he teased.

"So I can get attacked?" she laughed. "I'm not sure I follow your logic on that one."

"You can't tell me you're not curious about what I have in mind," he pointed out.

"Sure I can tell you that," she smirked.

"I wouldn't believe you," he said simply and motioned to the board. "Black or white?"

She sighed. "Maybe I'm losing my touch. White, please."

"I'm sure you're not," he assured her easily and carefully turned the board around so white was on her side.

"Now you're just saying that," she grinned as she studied the board then moved a pawn out.

Roy casually blocked the pawn with his own and briefly glanced up at her. "I wouldn't dream of doing that."

"As you shouldn't," she agreed. She slid her bishop out, playing with an opening she'd not used around him before.

It took a moment before Roy decided on how to proceed and he moved his knight forward. "I only say what I mean," he assured her.

"Is this part of that vaunted military straightforwardness?" she asked innocently.

"The military is straightforward?" Roy asked.

"Isn't that what all you soldiers boast about?" she replied, moving out another pawn.

"Being in the field is simple enough," Roy agreed, his attention more on the board than on her. "Receive orders and follow them through. It's harder outside of that when you're moving up the ranks."

Aly nodded, not disputing that. "Everything's more political."

"I should have seen that coming," Roy laughed and moved his rook into play.

"You really, really should have," she grinned, setting up with another pawn.

"You came from my left," he told her, trying to see what she was planning to do.

Aly waved a hand dismissively. "Excuses, excuses."

"Hmph," Roy leaned forward and damning his defense, he moved a pawn to capture one of hers.

"So you're pregnant?"

She coughed on a sip of juice. "I should have known you'd listen to the radio," she said.

"It's my job to stay informed," Roy nodded, watching her. "Congratulations?"

"No, that's not needed," she said hastily. "I'm not pregnant. At all. Just a prank."

He'd been wondering that it might have been and it was tempting to tease her further about it, but he wasn't sure if she'd take it too well.

"You have a lot of pranks to deal with," he remarked instead.
