MCA #10 - Saturday morning

The bed Roy woke up in was rather big, but big beds were fun and he wriggled away from the girl sleeping beside him to inspect the heap of kittens lying at the foot of the bed. Dee got up to inspect him back and her whiskers tickles his cheek and nose, making Roy giggle.

"Stop that! It tickles."

"Hey! I can't hold it steady if you do that!" he protested.

"You gotta hold it steady when someone else hits it with a sword," Aly said, rolling her eyes. "My foot shouldn't matter."

"I've never done this! It matters now!"

"You're doin' okay for a beginner," she acknowledged graciously.

Roy didn't think he was doing anything, so he wasn't sure what he was doing okay. "So now what?"

She snickered and rummaged through her closet for a stick. "Then you move it like this and there's a block."

He copied her, a bit more clumsy. "Like this?"

"Yep! Only you gotta MEAN it," Aly said approvingly.

"I mean it!" he replied. He thought he did anyway.

"Nuh uh," Aly said, shaking her head. "You gotta mean it cause the other guy is gonna mean it, and they're trying to kill you!"

"I'll mean it then!" He was sure he would too.

"You do it the way you practice it," Aly said, obviously repeating something she'd heard before.

"You'd get nervous and do it differently," he argued.

"Nuh uh," she said, shaking her head. "That's why you gotta practice over and over and over and then when it really happens, your muscles know what to do."

He blinked. "My muscles?"

"That's what you fight with," Aly said, snickering at him.

"But my brain does the thinking!" Because duh.

"Yeah but..." she considered that for a moment. "You gotta be able to react."

"I can't react with my brain?" he asked her.

"Can your brain stop a sword coming at you?" Aly asked curiously.

"Sort of?" he was getting confused now.

"Okay!" Aly said, swinging the stick at him and expecting his brain to stop it. Not that the swing was that hard.

Roy more flinched and jumped sideways than try to block it.

Aly frowned. "I thought your brain was going to stop it."

"I moved aside!" he pointed out.
